Construction Permitting System

Overview

  • Opportunity

Applying for a construction permit can be a tedious endeavor. Many of the requirements needed to submit a compliant application can feel mysterious to the public, and a rejected application can lead to delays and unplanned expenses for a homeowner or enterprise.

The online application process prior to our solution required a user to know which permit(s) they were applying for in advance. This prevented users from properly identifying their permit needs, obtaining the correct forms to apply for work permits and submitting payment in a timely fashion. As a result, applicants were often required to make an in-person visit for a successful transaction.

  • Solution

Design a responsive web application to guide citizens and enterprises through the complexities of applying for local construction permits. Residents, contractors, architects and other related business professionals can answer simple questionnaires to identify the permit(s) required for their construction needs.

The system will provide validation points to prevent applicant rejection, with the ultimate goal of obtaining the work permit(s).

Users will be able to submit payment online, and have the ability to track the status of the permit application, thus avoiding the need of in-person appointments or phone calls.

  • My Role

I was the User Experience Director for the project. I conducted user research, defined personas, led design thinking workshops, created customer journey maps, created lo-fidelity prototypes, led client workshops and presentations, and contributed to the design of hi-fidelity prototypes along with my team of UX designers, researchers, and content strategists.

Currently, I lead all ongoing UX design for efforts to scale and enhance the system for broader commercial use.
